Having packed the dogcart, borrowed from the landlord of The Spotted Dog, with their possessions, the Narrator and his wife escape to Leatherhead. But with "war-fever" in his blood, the Narrator returns via Pyrford where the third cylinder lands and he sees for the first time the Martian tripods striding over the landscape. This walk follows in the Narrator's footsteps, from Pyrford Common back to Maybury Hill, where he meets up with Artilleryman and plots their escape from Woking on the Sunday in The War of the Worlds.
