"Oh what a Lovely War"
This is a funny, thought-provoking and moving piece of theatre that is as relevant today as it was when it was first devised by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Group in the 1960s. The Rhoda McGaw Theatre Company is formed from actors and actresses whose companies are affiliated to the Woking Drama Association. The production, directed by multi award-winning local director Judith Dolley, is our homage to the men and women who lost their lives in that war, and the many subsequent wars that have involved our armed forces down the years.
2014 sees the 100th Anniversary of the start of the worldwide conflict that became known as The Great War. This First World War claimed millions of lives and almost wiped out a generation of brave young men who did their duty and fought for ‘their King and their Country’. Through the parody of an end-ofthe- pier pierrot show, Oh, What a Lovely War tells the story of some of those soldiers. The horrors of the fighting, the deprivation and hardship, but most of all the comradeship of the trenches is movingly told through the songs of that Edwardian era, when the country still held staunch Victorian values of honour and duty.
