Party in the Park 2014 is hailed another great success!

Around 5,000 visitors braved the changeable weather conditions on Saturday (5 July 2014) to enjoy an extravaganza of music, dance, sport and culture at Woking’s annual free, family-friendly Party in the Park.
From midday to 7pm, Dallas Campbell, BBC presenter from Bang Goes the Theory, introduced hardy souls to an exciting mix of interactive activities, workshops, sport on the big screen and live music and dance performances by local and national artists.
The Deputy Mayor of Woking, Cllr Derek McCrum, officially opened proceedings before Woking Dance Festival’s spectacular programme of dance kept crowds entertained with varied performances, including Asian and African fusion, street, acrobatic, lindy hop and tap.
The Big Screen kept everyone up-to-date with the country’s magnificent weekend of sport showing the opening stage of this year’s Tour de France from Yorkshire, the women’s singles final from Wimbledon before the long-awaited World Cup quarter final between Argentina and Belgium.
Visitors young and old enjoyed the ‘Brass on the Grass’ bands that got everyone’s fingers clicking and toes tapping with their mellow sounds of swing and jazz music, while others could learn a few dance moves in the Have a Go Tent.
Tempting food stalls offered a treat for the taste buds, giving visitors a taste of what they can expect from the Borough’s Woking Food and Drink Festival, taking place in September 2014.
To round off a great day, live bands Rayguns Look Real Enough and The Funatics performed stunning sets that kept the crowds moving.
Speaking after officially opening this year’s Party in the Park, Deputy Mayor of Woking, Cllr Derek McCrum, said: “What a fantastic event! I was delighted to see so many people in Woking Park on Saturday. Despite the wet weather, families, groups of young and old alike grabbed their brollies and came out to enjoy the many performances and take part in the activities on offer. I thoroughly enjoyed its inclusive, eclectic and community-based nature and the opportunity to speak to the many groups and organisations involved. The event really did celebrate what’s great about Woking and what we should be proud about!”
